Good Boys is a 2019 American comedy film co-written and directed by Gene Stupnitsky, in his directorial debut. The film stars Jacob Tremblay as Max, Brady Noon as Thor, and Keith L. Williams as Lucas. The movie’s plot centres on three sixth graders who are hellbent on trying to impress girls and upperclassmen by skipping school and attending young adult parties. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg serve as producers through their Point Grey Pictures banner.
The Movie-Warden’s take.
For a young actor to have starred in 14 films at just the age of 12; 11 of them being feature films, then you’d know he is on a path to Hollywood greatness. Admittedly, I haven’t watched much of Jacob Tremblay nonetheless, his performance in a certain 2017 film called Wonder was quite extra-ordinary; he without a doubt is cementing his place among the most promising young talents in the movie industry today.
If there’s an unlikely scenario where I find myself seeing ‘Good Boys’ in theaters, it’s definitely going to be because of Tremblay’s character. I really like how multi-faced Alex is in this trailer from his loyalty i.e. always involving his buddies in what he does. Alex is also a smart-arse i.e. he shows off to his friends how knowledgeable he is about menstrual period products as well as his understanding of the word ‘nymphomaniac’; he happens to be wrong in both cases. Alex is also an influential fellow i.e. rallying his friends to go to do crazy stuff.
I don’t mean to imply that the other kids don’t seem to be pulling their weight around as far as characterization is concerned, not in the very least. I just think Alex is promising to be a figure that will generate the most entertainment and have the most depth in the movie, if this particular trailer is anything to go by.
From the kids spying on their neighbour in the hope of learning how to kiss to Brady Noon’s character trying to outwit a security guard upon stealing a bottle of beer and hiding it in the groin area, this movie is reassuring the audience of a fun and comedic time once it debuts in theaters and on DVD.
Good Boys seems like a twisted coming-of-age story which works well with the comedic genre to bring about a fun and enjoyable piece; I must say, I am looking forward to this film for sure.
One more thing. The marketing strategy based on the teaser posters is quite clever; the sarcastic title and it’s design as well as the ‘You must be this tall to see this movie’ tagline, a reference to the fact that the movie’s Rated-R. Additionally, the marketing gimmick i.e. ‘From the guys who brought you…’ is used here. As cliche as it is, it will contribute to the film’s Box Office numbers without question based on the films that have been featured as well the comedic masters behind the scenes case in point, Seth Rogen.
