ROCKETMAN (2019) – Trailer 2 Reaction .

Rocketman is an upcoming American musical drama film directed by Dexter Fletcher, best known for films such as ‘Wild Bill’ and ‘Sunshine on Leith’. Starring an ensemble cast of Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard, the plot pivots on the life of celebrated musician Elton John from his early years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music highlighting his struggles with self-identity, drug addiction and fame.

The Movie-Warden’s take.

If there’s one thing that I love about recent musical biopics is the fact that they are presenting the coming-of-age stories of iconic musicians of the past generations to the new generation audience. It’s an audience who in most cases know little to nothing about the existence of their music yet alone the musicians themselves. The most recent one, Bohemian Rhapsody, did this wonderfully though it had its fair share of flaws. The latter were particularly on over-dramatization as well as the story not reflecting the actual sequence of events; a factor that I hope Rocketman won’t be victim of as well.

Frankly, I’d be lying if I said I am or have been a fan of Sir Elton John but I do respect what he has done in his career. He is an icon, he has inspired many with his music and I believe Rocketman, based on the trailer, will reflect on his career in away that will make me and you appreciate his musical journey even more.

I have to acknowledge the aesthetic of the production design, Elton John’s costumes look great and stay true to the what the singer used to don during his heydays while executing his performances. Additionally, the quote “You’ve gotta kill the person you were born to be in order to become the person you wanna be!” teases the theme of transformation; one of if not the most important themes in literature and in movies according to me.

When all is said and done, I think audience members will mostly look back at Taron Egerton’s performance as the prime reason why they either hated the film or they liked it. Basically, the weight of this movie will be resting on his shoulders .Egerton is a versatile young actor, he certainly looks the part hence perfect casting and I expect this to be his best performance outside the Kingsman films. Of course I don’t want to get my hopes up too much on his portrayal nonetheless, he indeed has what it takes to play Elton in a way that not only brings the legendary story to life but also shows a side to his craft that we have never seen before.
